It’s no secret that I gravitate towards music that comes from the heart and that tells a story. LOVE LETTER FROM DALLAS by ScaredChilde hits both of those marks. This is a pop punk song that stabs you right in the gut, and with each subsequent listen, it twists the knife deeper and deeper. It is a deceptively simple story, one that is equal parts universal and deeply personal.
This song is the story of a person who is always travelling. Someone who has to leave their loved one behind, and is thinking about them while they’re away from home. The constant battle between needing to be on the road for work, but missing that half of you that you’re leaving behind. It’s one that so many people can relate to.
I used to get excited travelling this world alone…
The reason why it hits so hard is because this is the reality for both members of ScaredChilde. Griffin Burns (from New New Girlfriend fame) and Patrick Pedraza. Both of these men are professional voice actors who go from state to state, and sometimes country to country, in order to meet fans at different conventions. Having met both of them, it’s clear how much they love what they do, but it also must be so tiring to be away from the people that they loved day in and day out.
What am I doing here? / And is it worth the wear and tear?
But channeling these feelings into this song has created something so beautiful, so heart-wrenching. They’ve created a universal anthem for the touring soul. Whether fellow voice actor, musician, or otherwise. And the sad poetry of this song (likely) actually being written in a hotel room doesn’t escape me.
Thank you Griffin and Pat for sharing your hearts with us. I hope that the people who this song are for can take some solace in this whole and total declaration of love. But even more, I hope that both of you guys can get some time off to spend with the people that matter the most.
