It should come as no surprise at this point, but the Los Angeles band, New New Girlfriend is incredibly important to me. There’s just something really special about the powerful duo of Kylen Deporter and Griffin Burns and their music is honestly only half of it. Part of what makes this band so special is the community that they have created and cultivated. This community is everywhere online, but a concentrated bunch lives on a Patreon-only Discord server called NNG & Friends.
Today is the server’s two-year anniversary. As a thank you to the band that has brought us all together, I’ve compiled a few of the members’ favorite memories, and some messages.
My hope is also to reach out to any NNG fan who doesn’t know about the server, and encourage them to check it out. You get to support the band, and be part of a fun community. If you’re interested, head on over to Patreon and check it out. And if you’ve somehow never heard of this band, here is their Spotify, you won’t regret giving them a listen.
But that’s enough of that! On to the messages:
“My favorite memory was probably right before I Haven’t Forgotten came out, and in the VIP call Griffin was telling us the details of how they shot the music video and how he was a little bummed that he couldn’t fit everyone’s pictures they submitted into the video so he made a collage for the end so that everyone could be included. I thought it was really sweet that he wanted to make sure everyone’s pictures were there because they obviously mean a lot to the people who submitted them.
The movie night where we watched Tucker & Dale vs Evil was a lot of fun too, it was really nice getting to know a few of the people [in the server] in a low-pressure setting.” –Moth
“My favorite memory related to NNG is definitely the first time I heard them at Anime Impulse Anaheim. I remember loving the performance so much that I listened to the music nonstop on my way home from the convention.” –Saturn

“My favourite NNG memory came when I met Griffin at MCM Comic Con when he came over to Birmingham in the UK. I struggle with my anxiety and I listened to New New Girlfriend on the train the whole way there from North Wales, it made me feel calm and safe. When I met Griffin I told him this and how much his and Kylen’s music had helped me. He told me about the NNG discord server and I joined it as soon as I got home. Griffin was so kind letting me gush about the band and how much it meant to me and I cannot thank him enough for spending that time talking to me about their music. I’m very much hoping that sometime soon I can fly over to the US to see them play live. And will continue to pester all UK cons asking for them to get Kylen and Griffin for a UK New New Girlfriend gig.” – Caitlyn

“When it comes with NNG I stumbled upon them on tik tok and thought hey why not give it a try I don’t really listen to music but it’s worth a shot
I listen to a song or two and really enjoyed it and put it on from time to time and slowly listen them more and more
Then one day during a livestream from griffin he had mention a patron with a discord for his band
So when I heard about it I decided hey why not give it a go and meet new people and if I don’t like it I can just leave in a month
Anyway so it’s been over a year and I absolutely love the sever with everyone in it
The discord was a pretty much the main reason I got to making memes as it was so fun to see everyone reaction to me putting kylen and griffin into the memes
I’m great full to this day to be able to join such a incredible group of people weather it’s with the monthly calls or just posting a picture to the discord” – Cherri (The Discord Server’s Official Meme Master)

“I’m unlikely to ever get to meet the guys in person, but their music and just goofing off on Gartic Phone or the calls has always been a bright spot while I’m dealing with my crap. Even when I wasn’t up to doing much more than just play music to drown out the noise while in hospital. NNG (and by extension, the server) are my “home for all seasons” as it says in Snowman… hence the picture. Love you guys!” – Andy
“I think one of my top favorite memories is dancing to Save the Date with my pixelwhip and getting to share that with them!” – Hannah

“One of my most cherished memories with NNG has to be going to see my very first NNG show which was at Republic of Pie. It was my first time flying cross country on my own. It was the first time that I was able to meet Kylen and a few members from the discord in person. Even though I was nervous meeting everyone for the first time, hanging out with Griffin, Kylen, Matty, and Banana before the show was so much fun. They’re all such kind, warm, and amazing individuals. The show at Republic of Pie will forever be one of my favorites. It was my first NNG concert. The small venue paired with an acoustic performance just felt very special. Being able to talk to and joke with the guys in between songs was fun. I’ll never forget making a meme for the discord server over the fact that Kylen “forgot” how one of his own songs went. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been a part of this community for a year and a half already. Time has gone by so quickly. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it, and I look forward to all the new memories we’ll all make together in the future.” –Keres

“Picking a favorite NNG memory is so difficult because the server has been such a bright part of my life for 2 years. If anything I have too many good memories to write about. I first started listening to the band in 2021, later that year I had an extended battle with a kidney stone and NNG was the only music I could tolerate listening to while I waited for surgery. So, my fondness for the first ep begins there and then just grew to a point that when the patreon was announced, signing up was a no brainer. I was one of the first server members, back when there were no channels and briefly, no moderator. Now we have the best moderators and a bunch of channels even if the owl-city one is gone (rip)
The best NNG memory for me was taking the trip out to California and getting to see them perform live, TWICE. Best of all I got to meet my best friends I met because of the band. I would be lost without them and I have NNG to thank for bringing us together. I know we mentioned to you both when we were out there but that big weekend was the first time we all got to be together in person because of your music.

It was amazing to see the band perform live, to get to sing along to the songs I know so well and even make up silly hand motions to the lyrics. I loved shouting things from the crowd ie “Cardigan of a broken heart” and other nonsense. It was the best experience and I can’t wait to do it again. My phone background is a collage from that trip, even on my worst days I can look at it to help me feel better.
Another great memory is the experience of getting to send in pictures to be part of the “I haven’t forgotten” video. First of all, the fact that we got a music video was awesome but then to get to hear about the process was even better. There’s always a risk writing songs about grief that they’re going to be too sad, but this one is so well written it’s endearing. I lost my father when I was 11, my last words to him were “I won’t forget you” so years later having a song with his picture in this video makes me feel like I made good on that promise. Thanks guys for letting me be part of that.

I can say a million things I love about the server and about the band but really the greatest thing to come from the server is getting to know Griffin and Kylen. It’s been fun to play silly games, hear about the music process and support people doing what they love. Thank you both for sharing your music with us, tolerating our silly memes and just being yourselves. Your authenticity is what really makes this band special.
I’m so excited to see where else the music goes, to hear new songs and get to see Kylen’s sweet guitar dancing next time there’s a concert. Thanks for all that you two do, I’m so happy I get to come along for the journey.” – Danni
“I subbed to the patreon on a whim to treat myself after having some medical challenges after I met Griffin at akai con 2022. I had heard New New Girlfriend before on a livestream Griffin hosted back in 2021 (sadly i do not have a recording of this as i didn’t realize how big of an impact it would later have on me!) and listened to everything that was out at the time religiously. I’ll admit I started out a huge Tartaglia fan and my friend Irene was big into voice actors and I just jumped on that bandwagon and wanted to meet Griffin really badly to say how much I liked his work for that particular character. I subbed to the patreon and joined the little discord server which became an outlet for me in a private community to share things with. After one of the VIP calls Matty hung out with me after call and I just knew I had to be friends with this person. They were so cool and funny and we were having such a good time hanging out on call. I met Danni and likewise everything just clicked and I knew I had found my people. During my first year in the discord server I was dealing with severe health issues along with my dad battling brain cancer. I feel that it was meant to be that I would connect with Danni and Matty, because they helped me so so much with my mental health and coping with the eventual loss of my father. Our group chat became the “Dead Dads Club” and they helped me and are still helping me process my grief. They are two amazing friends and I can’t believe a whim brought me in their path and everything aligned to where we would become so close. Back in September of 2023, New New Girlfriend was having a show at Hotel Cafe and at Anime Impulse the next day. I was bummed Danni would be visiting Matty and going out to see them when I couldn’t rationalize taking time off just to see a band on the other side of the country…
Work was hell for numerous reasons and I was in transition to move to another team. I only had a week left with my manager at the time and said fuck it — lied about Matty’s mom dying (she is very alive) and got the time off last minute to attend her funeral aka Hotel Cafe and Anime Impulse. FINALLY me, Matty, and Danni were able to all meet up and be in one place together!! I had met them both separately, but this hit different. We had so much fun together and I still look back at that weekend and think about what an amazing time it was. I don’t care if it’s cheesy but it really does feel like everything happens for a reason. I’m so grateful I chimed in to Griffin’s live stream that day and heard my first New New Girlfriend song “That’s Why I.” It’s a lot to say a band changed my life, but I honestly don’t know where I’d be without my two best friends by my side. Thank you for your music. This discord server is proof of your strength and ability to bring people together. I look forward to many more songs to come and seeing where the band goes.” –Banana
“Like I’ve said before, and made it pretty clear here on this site, New New Girlfriend is my favorite band. I first learned about it when Not Just Anyone was released. I knew about Griffin through his voice acting, and I had heard his silly meme songs, but when I heard Not Just Anyone, I was shocked “Wow! This is actually amazing!” I immediately put it, and all the rest of the songs into a playlist. (That playlist is called ‘Reasons to Smile’ because it’s important to have a reason to smile every day 🙂 )

My introduction to the discord server is a bit unusual. I saw that they were opening one, and I didn’t think that either of them knew how to run a server, at all. Spoiler alert: I was correct. I reached out, offering my services as a mod. I was hired, and the rest is history. Not only is NNG my favorite band, this is my favorite community. Though we are small, we’re very tight-knit. We have numerous inside jokes…carrots, crocs, Owl City–to name a few. We also have traditions. Sometimes-weekly movie nights. Secret Santa gift exchanges during the Holidays. And through it all, we just have such a love and respect for this silly little band from Los Angeles.

For me, also, New New Girlfriend offered me a chance to return to what I love. Music journalism and photography. I had just moved out to LA myself when I found the band. Getting to experience their shows live and take pictures for them has been such a gift. They really remind me what this whole blog is all about: Music is a gift, and I am lucky to be able to experience it.
Plus, like the two previous stories detailed, I’ve met my best friends through this server. Would we have somehow met some other way? Maybe. But getting to spend time with them inside the server and out is something that I wouldn’t give up for the world. When we all got to go to the Hotel Cafe and Anime Impulse shows together, it was the best weekend of my life. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts in my time, but that night at Hotel Cafe, dancing alongside Danni and Banana, making Griffin and Kylen laugh with our stupid little dances…definitely the best concert experience I could ever ask for.
Thank you Griffin and Kylen for sharing your souls with us. For putting up with the silly (incredibly weird) memes. Thank you for trusting me to build and moderate your server. Your band has quite literally changed lives for the better. I can’t wait for the next show, the next song, and the next years ahead of us as NNG & Friends!” – Matty
(These are only a few of the members of the server. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get to everyone. Maybe next year, I’ll remember to start this much earlier lol)
Also since multiple people mentioned the I Haven’t Forgotten video, here it is. Amazing song. Amazing video. Amazing experience.
Matty, this one’s got so much obvious passion and love behind it. Glad you & NNG have enjoyed each other for as long as you have! 💝
