After the one-off romp of “New Body Rhumba,” NYC stalwarts LCD Soundsystem are back with their first mainline single since 2017’s “American Dream.” Despite the best efforts of recent sensation The Dare, James Murphy & co. have perfected the craft of indie sleaze. “X-Ray Eyes” premiered on DJ Anu’s radio show on NTS Radio, but is now available on all streaming platforms. Murphy, Wang, et al settle back into their groove with warbly synths, sparse-yet-bright percussion, and a scuzzy backbeat that ties the track together. “I’ve got eyes that can see inside/I can see right through your disguise,” Murphy warns.
The verse three minutes in depicts the affliction of seeing someone everywhere you look: “Every busboy, cigarette girl/Dental hygienist or backpacking teen/Newspaper seller, and the nightclub MC/You’re everything, you’re all I can see.” James infuses his trademark plainspoken interjections to disarm the listener – “The bones in your body, the blood in your veins/Your hasty decisions and behavioural chains/ Replaced all the cells, but still something remained/
But I’m losing you, sorry, what are you saying?”
Following the release of the single, James took to Instagram to give the lowdown on the next album cycle. He confirms that LP5 is in the works with no official slated date, as it is being forged in between live shows. He also confirms that a limited vinyl run will be available at both the upcoming LA & NYC shows. Check out Murphy’s official statement, and treat your ears to”X-Ray Eyes” down below:
