New York four-piece Momma celebrated the release of their stellar fourth LP, Welcome to My Blue Sky, with a secret show at Avenue A’s Nightclub 101. With a limited ticket capacity reserved for the first 70-100 in attendance, the line for the show outside the venue wrapped around the block. Lead singers Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten make a stylistic sonic pivot on the record that feels like a new beginning for the band; while ’90s rock revivalism has been having its day in the sun, its sunny sensibilities have never felt so believably effortless.
And at the asking price of $7 in cash at the door, we definitely got more than our money’s worth. Other local rock aficionados were in attendance, most notably Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan. The band started the night off with high energy, leaning into their big hit single, “I Want You(Fever),” to get the crowd’s blood pumping. The setlist wasn’t entirely a straight rundown of the new record, either; “Medicine” graced our ears and threw the moshers into a veritable frenzy. Their first live performance of “Bottle Blonde” breathed new life into the track, sporting a more stripped down sensibility.
