New York indie aficionados Geese return home from a country of 3-dimensions (4, if you count the following EP), two full years after their triumphant sophomore record. With “Taxes,” the four piece, led by the stalwart Cameron Winter (who recently released an excellent debut solo album this past December), usher in a new era. After sampling many new tracks off their upcoming third record – Getting Killed – at Kilby Block Party, the release cycle has officially begun.
At just over a brisk three minutes, the track is lyrically skeletal, with Winter opening on a damning sentiment: “I should burn in hell/I should burn in hell/But I don’t deserve this/Nobody deserves this.” Max Bassin‘s assured, confident percussion builds a path for the swell of instrumentation that breaches the floodgates with an underlining of the thesis statement: “If you want me to pay my taxes/ If you want me to pay my taxes/ You’d better come over with a crucifix/ You’re gonna have to nail me down.” Emily Green‘s confident guitarwork sits atop Dominic DiGesu‘s foundational bassline. The signature Winter croon is on full display, bringing some of the stripped-down feel of his solo record back to his main unit’s oeuvre. A jam section leads to an epiphany and a promise: “I will break my own heart from now on.” The track is a measured introduction to a fresh batch of songs that will assuredly push Geese’s sonic tendencies that much further.
Accompanying the single release is a music video that blends the manic nature of their live shows with a more choreographed vision. Getting Killed is slated for release September 26, 2025, via Partisan Records. North American tour tickets are available for purchase here.
