My Christmas Tree Fell Down – Hands of a Working Man

Christmas music is a difficult beast to tackle. There are songs that are canonized as capital C, capital S Christmas Songs (Yes, I know Christmas always has a capital C, but that’s besides the point). I’m looking at your classics like O Holy Night, Jingle Bells, you know the ones. Then there are the more contemporary choices like Last Christmas and All I Want for Christmas Is You. Everyone has a favorite, a song that brings forth that Christmas magic. And it’s been a long time since someone new has come onto the scene to bring us a new classic. But I’m here to say that this song checks all of the boxes for me.

My Christmas Tree Fell Down by Hands of a Working Man is short and sweet. It doesn’t overstay its welcome. There are some Christmas songs that really drag on and on and on, and you know this is true, because I’m not going to name a song, but everyone will have one that comes to mind. This sweet 2 and a half minute bop lasts long enough to leave an impression, and then disappears back up the chimney, leaving us wanting more. It invites the repeated play.

The second box that this song ticks is that it’s an earworm. It released on the 23rd, and I’m still singing it under my breath three days later, and I don’t think that’s going to stop anytime soon. Christmas songs need to be catchy and stick in your head. But it also can’t be annoying, one that you want out of there as soon as it’s in (Looking at you, Mariah…) It’s an honor to have My Christmas Tree Fell Down stuck in my head.

The song tells a story. A relatable catastrophe that is also a bit of a mystery. Why did the tree fall down? Is everyone okay? Now, we never get any answers to this conundrum; it’s okay because there are no other songs like this. This song is a relatively untapped market of Christmas Catastrophes (I know they exist, but it’s not as saturated as the others). I do have a theory of what knocked over the tree, but we’ll never know.

Yes, this was an excuse to include a picture of my cat.

Finally, the song is so well-made. There is so much talent packaged up neatly under this fallen tree. If you’ve ever read a review from me, you know that I’m not one to focus on technical terms, because I don’t know them. I focus on the feeling, and the way this song makes me feel is whimsical. It’s so fun. But I will add that the instrumentals beginning at 53 seconds are pure magic. So beautiful.

All in all, this is a song that I’m going to add to my playlist of Favorite Christmas Songs–which is a very short list. It joins the ranks alongside Don’t Shoot Me Santa by The Killers. Which is obviously a great honor. I know that it’s officially After Christmas (time got away from me) but I still highly recommend you give this song a listen. You can add it to your Christmas playlists for a full season of enjoyment last year. I know that’s what I’m going to do!
