Lost in The Night – Dead Man’s Bones

So, before I start this review, I do have to preface that I am currently neck-deep in a month’s long Ryan Gosling-induced fixation. This all stemmed from Project Hail Mary and shows no sign of stopping any time soon. And yes, I did get into Dead Man’s Bones because of my Ryan Goslingitis, but that’s only because I hadn’t ever heard of them before. But they are exactly my taste.

For those not in the know, Dead Man’s Bones is an indie band that started in the early aughts, starring Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields. It was a very haunting and Halloween-y project. They partnered with and featured the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir to add to the spookiness of it all. They released one self-titled album in 2009, and then…nothing.

Until now, that is. There were whisperings and wonderings among the fans if they were going to return to us, and a few days ago, it was revealed by Mark Avery (Ryan’s stylist) and Eva Mendes (Ryan’s wife) that there would be new music coming soon. And that soon was…today!

And honestly, October 27, 2026 may as well be Christmas because this new song is such a gift. It’s so hauntingly beautiful. Lost in the Night is not a new new song, per se. It was one of their unreleased songs that they used to perform live back in 2009. (Which gives me hope, because my favorite Dead Man’s Bones song is Name in Stone, which is also unreleased).

But the song is new to me, and it’s new to streaming services. Though I never heard them play this song live (anyone got a time machine?) It’s clear that in recording and producing this song, the band has not lost their indie flavor. And I hope that with the songs that have been promised, that continues to be the case.

This song feels like traveling down a lonely street at night in the rain. It’s a deeply romantic song, about loss, about yearning, about a desire to reunite. Lost in the night with you / And I’ll keep on walking till I find you.

It doesn’t have the horror, Halloween-esque feel the their first album did, but it certainly fits the dark and dreary vibes. There are many ways to speak about fear, and about the darker moments in life. And I think this song captures that so incredibly well.

And of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the vocals. Ryan’s singing is just so beautiful. It’s deep, it’s slow, it’s careful. And when the harmonies with Zach comes in…magic. Pure magic. You know I love me a musical duo that can harmonize.

And after 17 years, it has been confirmed that this is not a one and done. There is more music confirmed to be coming. I would like to imagine that they are building towards album number two. But honestly, anything that they give us is a treat, and a historical moment.

Ryan Gosling fan, or not, definitely check out Dead Man’s Bones, both the self-titled album and just the band themselves. And do yourself a favor and listen to Lost in the Night. You will not regret it.

And if music videos are your thing, they released one along with the single!
