Track Review: Loose Buttons – “My Gemini”

Left to right: Adam Holtzberg (drums), Zack Kantor (guitar), Eric Nizgretsky (lead vocals, guitar), Manny Silverstein (bass)

New York indie rock quartet Loose Buttons has amassed a wealth of defining tracks over the course of two studio records, and in the lead-up to their much-anticipated LP3, You Came To See Magic, they have steadily been releasing singles from the tracklist. Having already made the trip out to Brazil, and regaling us with the time they saw Jon Hamm at the beach, “My Gemini” stands apart as a sonically singular and sincere attempt at depicting the lead singer’s most personal romantic relationship. The track is bookended with urgent splashes of percussion courtesy of drummer Adam Holtzberg, before guitarist Zack Kantor lays down some of his slinkiest guitar work yet. Quite possibly one of their hookiest refrains comes right out the gate, accompanied by Manny Silverstein‘s self-assured bassline – “Sang all night/Drank all night/ Fought til the morning.

Ever an emblem of modesty, frontman Eric Nizgretsky lyrically posits himself as a “talent show winner, faking as a singer, don’t you know?” Anyone close enough to NYC’s indie scene that has bore witness to the Buttons in a live capacity knows that Eric is easily one of the most charismatic and effortlessly entertaining leading men in the genre. “I’ve got a Gemini staring back at the mirror,” he continues, taking a measured notice of his beloved partner and titular Gemini, Ellie Toder, whose birthday it is today!!! (We love you, Ellie!)

The Gemini in question is none other than Nizgretsky’s soon-to-be wife, Ellie Toder, a pillar of support found front and center at any Buttons show.

He goes on to describe their dynamic and how they navigate mood shifts together, noting: “One day she’s like this, the other she reacts/ But I’m the guy that like it when she’s like that.” What’s more is that Nizgretsky underlines the necessity of being two separate individuals in a union – a sure sign of a healthy, well-maintained relationship that resists the urge to become an amorphous singularity, not unlike Edvard Munch‘s “The Kiss.” Affectionately, he speaks on the ever-present love that binds them, even in the moments when they’re not physically together: “She’s got Fashion Week, while I’m stuck writing these lines/But you are woven in these verses, babe.” Eric ramps up vocally on the third verse, giving some of his most impassioned pleas – “I want you to know I only think of you/ But can’t help wondering, are you thinking what I’m thinking, too?” Headphone splitters and late-night Springsteen karaoke dapple the shimmering city lights of an evening spent with your special someone, rounding out “My Gemini” as one of Buttons’ most tender, replayable singles yet.

Their forthcoming eleven-track record is slated for release on August 21, 2026. In addition to their album, Loose Buttons will be playing at Irving Plaza on June 25, 2026 in support of The Reytons. Get your tickets here:
